Cycling Without Age (CWA) is a global movement that began in Denmark in 2012 and now operates in over 50 countries worldwide. Its mission is simple yet powerful: to help seniors and people with limited mobility reconnect with their communities through free bike rides in specially designed, electric pedal-assisted trishaws—piloted by trained volunteers.

In Sarnia, Cycling Without Age is proudly delivered by the Bluewater Cycling Organization (BCO). Through BCO’s volunteer-driven programming, trained pilots visit care homes, seniors’ centres, and community groups to provide safe, enjoyable rides throughout the community. Each trishaw can carry up to two passengers, creating space for conversation, shared stories, and moments of discovery—often rekindling cherished memories and the simple joy of being outdoors.

More than just a ride, Cycling Without Age Sarnia—through BCO—fosters connection, combats loneliness, and strengthens intergenerational bonds. It is about dignity, inclusion, and reminding every participant that they remain a valued and active part of our community.

An age-friendly community supports healthy active living for people through all stages of life and abilities. It is a community that fosters civic, economic, and social participation throughout the life course and makes it easy for older people to stay connected to people who are important to them. It is a place where people can stay healthy and active even at the oldest ages and where appropriate supports are available for those who can no longer look after themselves. Age-Friendly Sarnia-Lambton launched in 2015 with the Age-Friendly Action Plan through a grant opportunity offered by the Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility, and has developed and evolved over several more grant opportunities. On their website you will find information and services to help you:

  • Be engaged in your community
  • Stay healthy and active
  • Find care and support
